Spottswoode Description
Originally established in 1882, the Spottswoode Estate has a distinguished history in Napa Valley. A decade after moving here, founder Mary Novak produced the first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. We have farmed our grapes organically since 1985, and our vineyard was certified organic (CCOF) in 1992. Now stewarded by second-generation sisters, Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak, our forty-two acres are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with small blocks of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc.
Wine Enthusiast: 98 Points
Cellar Selection
Nuanced, with 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, this is a quietly powerful wine, smooth and structured and immediate in its beauty, yet possessed of legs to cellar for 20-plus years. Crushed flowers and rocks open on the nose, providing a clutch of minerality, as grippy tannins support red currant, plum and a freshness of persistent acidity.
James Suckling: 96 Points
Amazing burnt-orange and currant aromas with tar and lead pencil. Blackberries, too. Changes all the time. Mesmerizing. Full-bodied and powerful with super-polished tannins and a long and intense finish. The polished and fine tannins coat your mouth. Glorious.
Vinous: 96 Points
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as a blend of the 2013 and 2012, with the darker fruit profile of the former and the mid-weight structure of the latter. Hints of mocha, chocolate, tobacco, menthol and licorice add shades of nuance, but the 2014 is in that stage where bottles are best left alone for several more years. Even so, the 2014 is another striking, alluring wine from Spottswoode.
Wine Advocate: 95 Points
Dark ruby in color, with just a bit of lightening at the rim, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up striking aromas of damp moss, loam and black cherries, framed by hints of cedar and vanilla. It's medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety in feel, with a long, complex finish redolent of dried spices. It should drink well for at least another decade, probably more.
