Alphonse Mellot, the 19th eponymously named Mellot, is at the helm of this historic Domaine, located in the southwest corner of Sancerre, a wine appellation centered on a massive outcrop of unique Kimmeridgian Limestone giving these Sauvignon Blanc-based wines their uniquely intense mineral drive.
All farming is organic or certified biodynamic, with an elite team in the vineyards focused on low yields and ideal ripeness.
The house’s ‘Tete-de-Cuvee,’ Domaine la Moussière, is a single thirty-hectare vineyard, where the Kimmeridgian gives way to the marls of Saint Doulchard and the chalky soil of Buzançais, resulting in a unique mineral complexity, nerve, and vibrancy rarely reached anywhere in the world, much less Sancerre. La Moussiere is certified biodynamic. The wine spends 7-8 months on fine lees after fermentation, prior to bottling.
Vinous: 90 Points
The 2023 La Moussiere is a rounded, airy wine with pure, clear fruit. It's finely textured with curved edges, both from time on lees (8 months) and a combination of aging in wood, concrete and stainless steel vessels. The pure fruit shines through with no evidence of oak flavor, allowing the pretty lemon, nettle and fresh pineapple characters to sing. Biodynamic since 1999, everything is hand-harvested.
