The little-known appellation of Carema produces terrific examples of the noble Nebbiolo grape. Here the wine is ruby red in color, with an expressive bouquet of rose petal, red fruit, and hints of freshly ground coffee. The palate is intense, fruit-forward and spicy, finishing with a lively tannic structure and a long finish.
Cantina Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema Description
The Carema Reserve by Cantina dei Produttori di Carema tells the story of a wine-region still not known enough. The Nebbiolo (whose local clone takes the name of Picotendro) produced in this sunny basin in between of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta has always received less attention in comparison with the near Langhe famous for Barolo and Barbaresco, but in Carema every vine-row keeps a notable past, demonstrated by the complex architecture which constitutes this. Here hundreds of centuries-old terracings, called "tabbie", host the old vineyards perched on the wood arbors, held up by magnificent stone pillars: we are dealing with the "topie," universally recognized as real works of art, born with the precise function to keep the vineyards steady in the steep stone steps and to take advantage of the rocks capability to store the sun heat during the day and to release it when the night comes. The work of Produttori di Carema is entirely manual, including the maintenance of the dry stone walls, which protect the mountain from possible rockfalls or erosion. Started in 1960 as a little cooperative which put together only 18 local winemakers, today the Cantina dei Produttori di Carema is one of the most authentic places for the rediscovery of North of Piedmont Nebbiolo. This reserve, characterized by a winemaking process respectful of the most genuine features of the grape varietyand subjected to a long aging in wood, collects the essence of the Carema territory, able to generate complex and structured wines which will age perfectly along time.

The 2017 Carema Riserva is a touch forward in profile, but that’s not a bad thing at all, especially for readers looking for a wine to drink now. Sweet red cherry, mint, tobacco, dried herbs and orange peel show the gentle mellowing of a Carema that is entering its early plateau of maturity. Drink this over the next handful of years.
