Domaine Louis Jadot
Louis Jadot Description
There are 26 Premiers Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin, of which half are located in the valley called Combe de Lavaux, on calcareous and clay soil with marl. Clos Saint Jacques is oriented to the southeast and has only five owners. The Pinot Noir grapes are fermented in vats for up to 4 weeks, and then the wine is matured in oak barrels for 18 to 20 months.
Wine Spectator: 96 Points
Perfumed and spicy, exuding sandalwood, tobacco, black cherry and black currant aromas. On the palate, the sweet spice notes wrap around a core of fruit detail, while the dusty tannins line the long, bracing, mineral-infused aftertaste. Best from 2023.
Wine Enthusiast: 96 Points
Cellar Selection
A star in this producer's portfolio, this wine comes from a vineyard that rivals the Grand Crus in quality. It has immense structure as well as a long-lasting fruit character. Its richness and density will allow it to age well.
James Suckling: 96 Points
Blackberries and ripe strawberries with lemon rind and rose petals, following through to a full body and dense, powerful tannins, which are, nonetheless, ripe and mature. Wonderful richness and density at the finish. Solid as a rock. Try after 2022.
Vinous: 95 Points
The 2016 Gevrey-CHambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very seductive, candied bouquet with pure blueberries and red cherry fruit under a veneer of vanillary new oak that seems in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe tannins, well-judged acidity, smooth in texture.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is one of the most reticent wines in the Jadot portfolio this year, reluctantly unfurling in the glass with notes of red berries, rose petals, forest floor and cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a deep, multidimensional core, rich structuring tannins and bright acids, concluding with a notably long and expansive finish. While there is considerable upside here for the patient, this will demand significant bottle age. While the 2015 rendition is more flamboyant, the 2016 may well rival it in ultimate quality.
Decanter: 93 Points
The Clos St-Jacques is excellent, offering up an incipiently complex bouquet of red and black fruit, bonfire, rich soil, subtle grilled meat and a framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and deep at the core, its fine-grained chassis of rich tannins nicely cloaked in cool fruit. Serious and complete, this should develop very well in the cellar.
Burghound: 93 Points
There is a distinct coolness to the wonderfully pure and airy aromas of earth, rose petal, red currant and the sauvage that are set off by noticeable but not intrusive wood and menthol nuances. The rich, dense and sappy broad-shouldered yet refined flavors possess a suave and polished mouth feel, all wrapped in a stony and beautifully long finish. This excellent effort is markedly firm but very well-balanced and should age effortlessly for years.
