Domaine Louis Jadot
Louis Jadot Description
Volnay lies near the center of the Côte de Beaune and produces only red wines, with 26 Premiers Crus. In parallel to the way the character of Chambolle-Musigny wines compare to other wines from the Côte de Nuits, wines from the commune of Volnay show the most delicacy, elegance and finesse of wines within the Cote de Beaune. The soil of the Premier Cru is thin, chalky and high in calcium, for light, delicate wines compared to most of the Premiers Crus, whose soil is lower in chalk. The Pinot Noir grapes are fermented in wooden vats for up to 4 weeks, and then the wines are matured in oak barrels for 15 to 18 months before bottling.
James Suckling: 93 Points
Linear brightness with strawberries, lemon rind and clean fruit. Medium body, fine tannins and a savory finish. Some light meat and decadent qualities to this. Nice, sappy intensity.
Burghound: 93 Points
Soft wood surrounds the spicy floral and cool essence of red berries along with hints of earth and underbrush. The nicely elegant but tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors possess obvious muscle on the powerful, palate coating and serious finish that exhibits excellent persistence. Patience a requisite.
Vinous: 92 Points
The 2017 Volnay Clos des Chenes Premier Cru manifests quite potent marine scents on the nose, touches of kelp and marsh tincturing the mainly black fruit. The palate is medium- bodied, offering ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with orange peel and marmalade. This has good destiny and similar length to the Clos de la Barre, if not quite the same precision. Still, this is a fine Volnay.
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
From the southern side of this large premier cru, the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Maison Louis Jadot) offers up appealing aromas of plums, pomegranate, espresso roast, raw cocoa and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with good depth and concentration and a broad-shouldered chassis of fine but chalky tannin. This looks promising.
