Light pale-yellow colour. The nose is already quite expressive, showing aromatic herbs, ripe fruits. Very attractive nose! The palate reveals the classic volcanic signature with a mineral, salty taste. Amazing tense mid palate with a surprising acidity and a serious dry finish. Not a powerful wine but good persistency and more accessible in its youth. To be enjoyed now or later!
James Suckling: 95 Points
What an expansive and complex smoky, flinty nose this very energetic dry riesling has. Serious tannin structure, but the wine really needs and benefits from that. Terrific flinty drive in the extremely long, focused finish. Limited production, entirely from the Grand Cru Rangen. From biodynamically grown grapes.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
From 26-year-old vines on the very steep, south-facing slopes of the Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain and its sedimentary volcanic rocks, the 2022 Riesling Roche Volcanique opens with surprisingly coolish, pure and elegant mandarin fruit intermingled with reductive mineral or flinty/rocky notes and tones of cold ashes. Medium-bodied, elegant and linear on the palate, this seems to be a Riesling from the good old pre-global-warming times. It is very intense, long and complex without lots of alcohol or muscular power. This is rather a long-distance runner with remarkably fine and fresh acidity and the serious tannins of the normally dry and super sunny 2022 vintage.
Vinous: 93 Points
The 2022 Riesling Roche Volcanique is from the Rangen Grand Cru in Thann, from around 30 year old vines from the very top of the site where the soil is shallower. The nose is beautifully tight and clear-cut, with almost a touch of chervil surrounding the stoniness and that hint of reductive flint. The palate is taut but very juicy , bright and lemony, with lots of rich extracts. It's contained yet fluid and so mouth-watering, always with that clear-cut, salty stoniness. The 2022 is lovely and totally refreshing. (Bone-Dry)
