Colour yellow pale gold. Expressive nose, especially after some aeration, showing intense citrus fruits and a precise limestone signature which can be described as a combination of stony aromas and white fruits. The palate is crisp, ripe, very precise with a good acidity that enhances the dry finish. Again, the calcareous geology brings a certain quality of bitterness (tannins) that reinforces the acid structure. The wine seems tight at first, but eventually develops a great length. It is a beautiful wine today and will be in many years.
Domaine Zind Humbrecht Description
The Heimbourg vineyard in Turckheim is located on the south/south-west side of an Oligocen limestone hill that literally faces the valley of Munster. It is a spectacular small single vineyard which is quite difficult to cultivate. The domaine owns almost 2/3 of the lieu-dit which is today mostly planted in Riesling and Pinot-Gris. We used to have Gewurztraminer, but the vines were pulled out after the 2012 vintage. When we decided to replant the vineyard, we decided to go for Riesling. These younger vines are now added in this wine and quite amazingly, perform almost better than the older vines. We could see this in many other vineyards: when a vineyard is planted with bio-dynamic practice right from the beginning, they produce their first grapes later, but because they root better, the quality is there at an earlier stage. The soil can be considered as late ripening, but the exposition of this vineyard is solar. The vines do not suffer from drought in these soils, so the ripeness in vintages like 2022 can be very fast. Just like its neighbour the Grand Cru Brand, we have to watch the evolution of the ripeness very closely in order to avoid harvesting over ripe grapes. The fermentation was crucially slow but actually never really stopped allowing the wine to finish very dry.
James Suckling: 94 Points
Bold and rich with huge yellow fruit and an ample structure on the succulent medium- to full-bodied palate. Lively acidity, but the fine tannins are what drive the long, quite dramatic finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
Wine Spectator: 92 Points
There's loads of salty concentration to this warm, generous style, with an alluring core of stone fruit, spiced apple, chamomile and warm hay. Zesty and bright, with good tension to the well-meshed palate. A thread of green herbs and orange zest adds to the complexity on the finish, paved with stone.
Vinous: 92 Points
The 2022 Riesling Heimbourg was picked next to the Brand Grand Cru from two steep parcels, one south-west-facing, the other entirely west, rooting in poor iron-rich limestone. A touch of reduction casts a flinty haze on absolutely zesty citrus that unites Meyer lemon, grapefruit and tangerine. The palate is ripe and juicy with serene, expansive acidity that spreads a grapefruit zestiness. Beautifully nuanced aromatics make for a succulent, refreshing wine.
