Clos Saint-Jean is considered one of the top sites in Chassagne for Pinot Noir. This cuvée is made from 55-year-old vines planted and clay and limestone and 0.5 hectares of young Pinot Noir vines planted by Thierry Pillot. Often dubbed the Vosne of Chassagne, Paul Pillot's worked his magic yet-again with this release. Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Clos Saint is made from 100% hand-harvested Pinot Noir with Thierry Pillot painstacklingly cutting the bunches by hand. With clay dominant soils, the result is a powerful, silken Chassagne Rouge packed full of wild strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruits, underpinned by spice box and dusted cocoa notes on the finish. One for the cellar.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
Bursting with aromas of sweet red berries, peonies, orange zest and spices, Pillot's 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean Rouge is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, with a layered, complete profile, melting tannins and a perfumed finish. This parcel is cultivated with a lot of manual work, including "tressage" instead of hedging, representing something of a passion project for Thierry.
Burghound: 91 Points
Outstanding
An attractively fresh nose combines notes of dark berries, earth, rose petal and an interesting note of kirsch. The supple but appealingly punchy middleweight flavors conclude in a compact and moderately firm finish that should reward mid-term keeping. This is textbook Clos St. Jean.
