Clos De Tart Description
Alluring crimson robe with a wonderfully complex nose showing fresh red fruits, such as wild strawberry and loganberry as well as darker fruit flavours of blackcurrant and plum, along with earthy, spicy notes and a delicate floral perfume. On the palate this wine shows its pedigree, exhibiting exquisite balance and precision.

This remains the product of a very ripe vintage even if there are now secondary nuances present on the aromas of coffee, tobacco, plum, prune, smoked meat and dried herbs that are still trimmed in enough wood to notice. There is lavish richness to the opulent and almost thick flavors where the supporting structure is still firm though not so much that this couldn't be enjoyed now. This is not my style but it's not imbalanced or unduly warm and it's a wine that will live for 50 years, perhaps longer. With that said, I don't believe that the '03 CdT is going to improve further, though it will undoubtedly change progressively.

The 2003 Clos de Tart Grand Cru suffered less grillure than other vineyards in the Cote d'Or; around 25% of the vines were affected. This was picked at 21hl/ha from September 2, two weeks earlier than the 1976. It has a deep, refulgent hue. Unsurprisingly, it is hedonistic on the nose; notable glycerin lacquers the macerated dark black cherries, cassis and pastile-like strawberry fruit. With aeration, a kirsch-like element develops,accompanied by a hint of iodine. The 2003 is conspicuously sweet on the entry, with saturated ripe tannins, and very supple in the mouth, but my main gripe is that it does not build toward the finish. There is something a little static about the 2003 now, at 15 years of age. Will it ever blossom into something more? Tasted at the Clos de Tart vertical at Ten Trinity in London.
