The estate's Grand Vin's vineyards are located west of Ordonnac village. Its rows of vines grow on a double thalweg of gravelly-clay. They produce a very fine wine with tight texture, great richness and wonderful freshness. On the palate, the wine is pure and powerful, the tannins dense and spicy, and the finish of great depth with glorious aromas. Because of these qualities, Château Potensac is often considered to represent the "pure Medoc style". It should be noted that Potensac was the only "Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel" of its appellation.
Chateau Potensac Description
Château Potensac's vineyards extend mainly over hilly mounds with a limestone subsoil covered with clay and gravel outcrops containing a high proportion of gravel ("graves"). These limestone soils are very similar to those found in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. On this very special terroir, some plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc planted over 80 years ago still produce perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. The hamlet of Potensac was already cited in the first edition of Féret for the special characteristics and longevity of its wines.
James Suckling: 96 Points
One of the best ever with super currants, mint, mineral and iodine. Crushed stones. Medium- to full-bodied, it has wonderful caressing tannins that run the length of the wine. A real Potensac, cabernet-driven, that goes on for minutes. 43% cabernet sauvignon, 36.5% merlot, 19.5% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.
Vinous: 92 Points
The 2022 Potensac, matured in 20% new oak, was one of the best vintages from this Haut-Medoc that I had tasted from barrel. Now in bottle, this is blessed with an impressive, well-defined, focused nose. Its oak is neatly integrated, with plenty of vibrant black fruit laced with light estuarine scents. The palate is medium-bodied and very saline, with touches of sapid black fruit, black olive and black pepper. It's nicely controlled and classical, with residual pepperiness on the finish. This is very fine.
Wine Spectator: 91 Points
Dark currant and blackberry fruit is laced with charcoal, warm humus and paving stone notes, along with a flash of chestnut leaf. There's a singed cedar frame to the finish. Textbook. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
Aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper and licorice introduce the 2022 Potensac, a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy Médoc with a deep core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins.
