A great wine deep-rooted in the heart of Saint-Emilion.
Chateau La Gaffeliere Description
Refusing to bend to fashion trends, our family claims a vintners’ signature, typically French, inscribed between tradition and modernity. This respect of the terroir is linked to our origins. We are born here in this vineyard with its unique location backing onto the southern hillside of Saint-Emilion. The blend of wines from the slope and the foot of the hillside produces a nectar, which is powerful, racy and silky. This harmony is found in each vintage of our estate. We like to share our wine, to show its finesse and elegance, the result of a know-how passed down through generations.
Vinous: 99 Points
The 2022 La Gaffeliere is fantastic, but it has also closed down considerably post-bottling. Supremely elegant and perfumed, the 2022 is an absolutely stunning wine. Blood orange, pomegranate, spice, white pepper, dried herbs and all sorts of floral overtones soar from the glass. The Franc is so impressive here. I don't expect this magical Saint-Emilion to be ready any time soon. Today, it is a wine of dazzling complexity and purity for the cellar.
James Suckling: 97 Points
This shows crushed stones, chalk, salt and blueberries. Violets. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s firm and crunchy with lovely and precise tannins that are long and focused. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc. 10% whole-bunch fermentation.
Wine Advocate: 96 Points
A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 La Gaffelière derives exclusively from the prime hillside vineyards below Ausone that made this estate so compelling in the early and mid-twentieth century, and the 2022 is the finest wine produced at this address in many a year, surpassing the 2019 and 2020 in quality. Wafting from the glass with incipiently complex aromas of wild berries, violets, lilac, licorice, vine smoke and raw cocoa, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, with a deep, multidimensional and beautifully vibrant core of fruit and polished tannins, concluding with a long, mouthwatering finish.
Wine Enthusiast: 96 Points
A velvety structured wine (with firm tannins underneath), this is solid, concentrated and full of fine blackberry fruits. It is a powerful wine that will age well.
Wine Spectator: 96 Points
This offers a pretty captivating display of boysenberry and blackberry puree flavors liberally infused with violet, iris and ink details, while a racy graphite spine provides remarkable length through the well-cut finish. There's some high gloss toast, but the fruit is in clear command. A real head-turner. Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
