Sold under the name of “Château Margaux 2nd wine”, it took its permanent name of Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux in 1908. After an eclipse between the thirties and the mid-seventies, its production restarted on the arrival of André Mentzelopoulos in 1977 and at first greatly increased in order to improve the quality of the first wine. From the mid – 1990s, the creation of a third wine in its turn, allowed for a more and more rigorous selection for Pavillon Rouge. For a few years now, a third of the harvest has gone into the first wine, barely 30% into the Pavillon Rouge, and the remainder is divided between the third and fourth wines.
The quality of Pavillon Rouge has become very close to that of the first wine because all the plots involved contributed to the blending of Château Margaux not so long ago. Of course there isn’t the same complexity, the same depth, the same “magic” but the flavours are close and the balance in the mouth leads to the same subtle senses of power and softness. In general it is ready to drink a little earlier whilst retaining an excellent potential to age largely beyond 30 or 40 years.
Chateau Margaux Description
We paid careful attention to our selections for the Pavillon Rouge, which represents only 30% of the 2021 vintage. Our vineyards have undergone significant restructuring over the past few years. A revelation among these plots at the time of tasting was a Cabernet Franc harvested from a clay soil plot previously used to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine ended up constituting 4% of the final Pavillon Rouge blend, which is completed by 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. This wine has the very floral aromas characteristic of cooler vintages and is delicately tannic and silky on the palate.
James Suckling: 96 Points
This wine has a tightness and linear energy, with red currants, herbs, plums and hints of dark chocolate. Medium-bodied with beautiful integration and length. Racy and focused. Just the right amount of wood and fruit with tannins. Second wine of Chateau Margaux. 73% cabernet sauvignon, 18% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 4% cabernet franc.
Wine Enthusiast: 95 Points
The aromas of rich black-currant fruits dominate this second-label wine. With its blackberry fruits and rich, supple tannins, this shows strongly in its structure, complex black fruits and acidity.
Vinous: 92 Points
The 2021 Pavillon Rouge showed well from barrel. Now, in bottle since late June, it has a gorgeous, very pure, almost Burgundy-like bouquet that blossoms in the glass: raspberry, blackberry and crushed violet scents. The palate is medium-bodied with very succulent tannins, fine acidity, gentle grip and a disarmingly minerally, fresh finish. What a delightful Pavillon.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
The 2021 Pavillon Rouge offers up aromas of raspberries, sweet cherries and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively palate that's quite taut and youthfully structured out of the gates, with good depth at the core and powdery tannins. It will reward a bit of bottle age.
