Woodwork Wines is a brand launched with the intention of creating wines via a more sustainable use of oak - not only the type of oak, but the source. Instead of using barrels for aging, the company is using oak staves. We're talking about wines for drinking now, so we're not in dire need of the slow aeration a 'vin de gaurde' benefits from aging in barrels. The staves provide the 'spice' elements we all expect - vanilla, sandlewood, black pepper, dill - without the oxidation, or extensive environmental impact of a full barrel of wood. Secondly, their focus is American Oak. While it is not out of the question to see American Oak on American wines, it is far from the norm. By sourcing local oak, the company is also reducing a further carbon footprint associated with the use of the more popular oaks (primarily French) shipped from across the pond.
