Umani Ronchi Description
Pelago is an elegant blend produced with 50% Montepulciano, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot. The grapes are cultivated in Osimo, located in the area of Conero, Marche. The elevation of the hill swings between 150-200 meters above the sea level, with south-east exposition. The deep soil is characterized by clay, limestone, and loam. The production capacity of the vineyard varies depending on the vintage, but it is set around 50-70 quintals per hectare. The manual harvest is planned at the beginning of September for Merlot, at the end of the month for Cabernet Sauvignon and ends with Montepulciano in October, when the grapes reach the perfect maturation. The soft pressing and the elimination of stalks are followed by fermentation, managed at 28°C in steel for 12-14 days. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine ages in barriques for 14 months. The maturation continues in the bottle for another 12 months before release.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
This wine is now celebrating its 22nd harvest. The Umani Ronchi 2016 Pelago is a blend of Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot aged in French oak for 14 months. This is a wine with a deep core of dark fruit and a lot of stuffing that adds textural fiber and richness. Pelago shows a downright contemporary style that is expressed in terms of volume, softness, and phenolic weight (or sheer grape concentration). This is a super Marche wine from start to finish, with black cherry, blackberry, soft spice, leather, and tar. The 2016 vintage is especially rich and important. When you're ready to open it, sample it with wedges of an aged goat-milk caciotta.
Vinous: 93 Points
A dark and beguiling mix of mocha, grilled sage, exotic spice, and crushed black currants rises up from the 2016 Pelago. Further time in the glass brings forward a lifting hint of camphor contrasted by animal musk and underbrush. It's wonderfully elegant and soothing, casting silky textures across the palate with ease, which carry ripe red and black fruits, along with hints of sour citrus. This turns perfumed and spicy through the lightly structured finale, where sweet tannins mingle with residual acids to maintain a sensation of inner harmony. This is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Montepulcian, and 10% Merlot.
James Suckling: 91 Points
Aromas of sour cherries, currants, olives, cloves and rosemary. It’s medium-bodied with firm, fine tannins and fresh acidity. Savory and juicy finish. Drink or hold.
Wine Spectator: 90 Points
Savory green olive and tobacco notes on the nose transition to currant and fig fruit on the palate of this medium- to full-bodied red. Chalky tannins firm the lightly spiced, minerally finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano and Merlot. Drink now through 2026.
