The marquee grape of Northern Italian wine making, Nebbiolo is the star of Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo does nothing by halves: it is high tannin, high acid, and ferments into high-alcohol wines. Time is, therefore, a friend to this varietal. In the case of Barolo, traditional styles of this wine are aged at minimum of ten, and up to 20 years. Since the 1980s though, a more playful spirit spearheaded by the "Barolo boys" of Northern Italy has resulted in a wider array of younger nebbiolos that are ready to drink sooner.
