Mayacamas is the longest continually-operating winery in America, much less California. The old stone winery, built in 1889 into the side of the mountain foothills, has never been rested. The M.O. of winemaking is not barely ‘making’ at all - it is elevage. It is allowing the wine to express itself. How do we mean? At Mayacamas, they harvest earlier, to preserve the natural structure of the wine - acidity (as opposed to burying an over-ripe wine in new oak tannins and supplementing the depleted natural acidity with a truckload of tartaric acid powder)...I digress. They let what is already there do the work and cradle it along the way, instead of creating a science project.... Bottom line: you cannot find a more true expression of Napa Valley Mountain fruit than at Mayacamas. Since the 1940’s the style has remained the same; actually many of the large neutral oak fermentation tanks remain in use to this day.
This is not to say that the estate is not innovative. The new stewards of Mayacamas have continued to improve upon the old - particularly in a conscious replanting scheme that slowly began in 2013, and the integration of natural soil enrichment and pest integration systems. These practices, which are essentially one in the same, completely remove waste runoff, and the imbalance of the micro-climate caused by pesticides (the promotion of one insect, promotes the natural control of another).
As perennial stewards of the environment, they have maintained a small plantation: the nearly 500-acre estate remains planted to a mere 50-and-change acres, and as alluded to earlier, have been completely converted to organic practice. While they may be the old dog on the block, they aren’t stagnant on the porch. Do yourself a favor: stop reading this, grab a bottle, and let the wine do the talking. And really listen...
Mayacamas Vineyards Description
Founded in 1889, Mayacamas stands as one of the most storied vineyards and winery operations in Napa Valley. Since the 1950’s the vinification of Mayacamas wines has remained remarkably consistent with a continued commitment to employ classical techniques.
