Lynch-Bages Description
The story behind the name…
On Mount Olympus… According to Greek mythology, Zeus – a sometimes fickle husband – entrusted the nymph Echo with distracting his wife Hera by engaging her in endless chatter when he wished to tarry with some beautiful mortal. Hera, on discovering this little game, pronounced sentence on the nymph with the following words: “You will never be the first to speak, but you will always have the last word”. Echo’s life had changed forever, but that is another story…
Back in Bordeaux… Château Haut-Bages Averous is a property in Pauillac, acquired some time ago by André Cazes. For over 30 years, it was Lynch-Bages’ second wine. In 2008, a new identity was given to the second wine, under the name “Echo de Lynch-Bages”.
James Suckling: 94 Points
Dark currants with blackberries and a touch of pencil shavings. Good perception of freshness despite the ripe black fruit. Tight, full-bodied and fine-grained on the palate. Long, structured and juicy. 64% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Give it two or three more years.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
Revealing aromas of cassis, licorice, pipe tobacco and loamy soil, the 2022 Echo de Lynch-Bages is medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a deep core of fruit and plenty of chewy tannin. It shares much of the style of the grand vin this year, and it's one second wine that will reward a bit of patience.
Wine Spectator: 91 Points
Delivers a sappy (if perhaps slightly extracted stylistically) beam of dark cherry and cassis notes girded by graphite and sweet tobacco. Clear and precise in its message through the violet-accented finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Vinous: 90 Points
The 2022 Echo de Lynch-Bages has held its black cherry- and blueberry-scented bouquet. It might need a little more delineation, but it's very pleasurable. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, gentle grip and quite plush black fruit towards the finish. This is well worth seeking out.
