The wine has a shimmering dark ruby color, with initial aromas of red berry fruit and smoky earth. As the wine opens more subtle floral and spice notes appear, with hints of fern, woodsmoke, and iris. The finish is long and elegant, with fine tannins and supporting acidity carrying the wine across the palate. Highly versatile, this red wine is ideal with all roasted meats but also with hearty preparations of tuna or salmon. When mature this is an ideal accompaniment to aged or salty cheese.
Louis Jadot Description
This 5 acre parcel is one of the oldest in the Jadot range since it's acquistion in1836. Superbly situated on a steep, south-facing slope of red clay and small stones, this terroir benefits from full sun exposure and excellent drainage. The site's high altitude is felt in the dense yet ethereal nature of the wines, especially after a few years of aging.
Wine Spectator: 93 Points
A dense version, offering cherry, black currant, floral and mineral aromas and flavors. Delivering tannins that mesh well with the fleshy character, this remains balanced and persistent. The long finish echoes the fruit.
Vinous: 93 Points
The 2020 Beaune Clos des Couchereaux 1er Cru has a sorbet-fresh bouquet, touches of blood orange suffusing the vivacious red fruit. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, gentle grip, slightly darker fruit than the Theurons with a dash of cracked black pepper on the finish.
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
Revisited in bottle, the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Couchereaux (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) offers up aromas of sweet cherries, berries and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless palate that's lively and integrated, fulfilling the promise it showed in barrel.
Burghound: 91 Points
Outstanding
An interesting nose combines notes of various red berries and ripe plum with those of exotic tea and a whiff of orange peel. The seductive, generously proportioned and succulent medium-bodied flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract while the lingering and nicely complex if moderately dusty finish flashes a touch of austerity. This mildly warm effort is one of those wines that I suspect is best drunk either young, or with age but not necessarily in between as I suspect that it's going to shut down over the next few years. Lovely and fashioned in an understated style.
