Domaine Jean Grivot Description
Domaine Jean Grivot is among the great names in Burgundian wine. Étienne Grivot and his wife Marielle took over from Étienne’s father Jean Grivot in 1987. The vineyards are densely planted and farmed organically “sans certification” while the aim in the cellar is for balance and clear expression of terroir.
Jean Grivot’s 15.5 hectares spread across 22 appellations with vineyards in the communes of Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny, and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Besides the three grand crus, there are 8 premier crus including the much lauded Les Beaux Monts and Suchots in Vosne-Romanée. The grapes are completely de-stemmed and fermentation is spontaneous.
Wine Spectator: 95 Points
A rich, voluptuous red, boasting black cherry, plum, earth, spice and mineral flavors. Fluid, showing terrific structure and fine harmony. The finish lingers with fruit and oak spice notes. Decant now if you must, but better to cellar for a few years.
Vinous: 95 Points
The 2017 Echezeaux Grand Cru has a very precise bouquet, a little introverted at first, that features a mixture of red and black fruit and seems to grow in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with touches of tobacco and graphite lacing the dark plum and blackberry fruit. Very harmonious and long in the mouth, displaying a touch of brine toward the long finish. Excellent.
Burghound: 94 Points
A beautifully spicy nose consists primarily of the cool essence of red cherry, currant and lavender. There is a succulent and caressing mouthfeel to the sleek and relatively supple medium weight flavors that possess excellent punch on the lingering and youthfully austere finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. There is a hint of warmth but overall this firm effort remains quite well-balanced.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
Aromas of warm spices, espresso roast, grilled game and dark chocolate complement notions of dark plum and berry fruit, introducing Grivot's 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and expansive wine with a generous core of fruit, fine tannins and a giving, open-knit profile. This will drink well in its youth.
