Deep ruby. Mineral- and spice-tinged blackberry, bacon fat, olive and tobacco aromas pick up a smoky quality with aeration. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering juicy dark fruit preserve, spicecake, menthol and floral pastille flavors and a touch of smoky minerality. Closes with repeating spice and olive notes, well-judged tannins and strong tenacity. This bottling is comprised of young-vine Cornas and fruit that is grown on the southern outskirts of Cornas. It has very little in common with your standard Cotes-du-Rhone.

Easily the equal of some producers' Cornas, Clape's 2019 Cotes du Rhone—which comes from vines on just the wrong side of the road to be called Cornas—boasts attractive scents of menthol and cassis. It's medium to full-bodied and quite concentrated and tannic this vintage, yet finishes silky and long. Give it another year in the cellar and drink it through the end of this decade.
