Collemattoni Description
When Aldo Bucci agreed to send his son, Marcello, to college for enology (wine making), he didn’t realize he was setting himself up for a future in the business. At the beckoning of Marcello, Aldo purchased a 17th Century farmhouse in the southwest quadrant of Montalcino with an adjoining 2 hectare plot in 1982. Upon completing his degree, Marcello spent 5 years working with the most prominent houses of the region, and felt that he had the ‘recipe’ to grow the perfect wine. By 1988, they had their first wine.
Montalcino has four distinct variances in style, driven mainly by the simple physical trait of the appellation: one main hill. Marcello quickly saw that the southeastern side of Montalcino was the most elegant, while the southwestern side produced the most robust wines. Slowly, the Bucci’s added four more vineyards - two in the southwest; two in the southeast. The care taken in the vineyard, winery, and cellar reflects the utmost consideracy in regards to what the land has already offered in the fruit of the vine. Every berry is harvested by hand. Every bunch is carefully de-stemmed to avoid any other influence. This is extended to careful, controlled fermentations in stainless steel, fed and drained by gravity, avoiding any unnecessary force. Aging is only carried out in larger 750 liter French Tonneaux barrels or 3,200 L Slavonian oak. This allows the wine a gentle exchange with oxygen, without burying it under the ratio of wood tannin that a 225 L Bordeaux barrel brings; common in Brunello’s current phase...
Ultimately, Marcello has created the ultimate combination of power and elegance. Neither outweighs the other. In 2012, the Bucci’s brought Collemattoni fully under organic certification. The heat that is generated through all of the on site processes along with solar panel installations, create over 80% of the necessary electricity needed for their 5000 case operation
