Chateau Margaux Description
75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot
This is a superb second wine with fine, light structure, dark ruby color and rich fruit. Pavillon Rouge does not require a long time in barrel and matures more quickly, but still carries a fine potential for aging in the great vintages.
This second wine of Château Margaux was introduced in 1908 and now represents 50% of the overall estate production. Generally selected from vats and barrels of a lesser caliber than the "Grand Vin," it is typically made from the younger vines.
Time-honored techniques still prevail here. Grapes are manually harvested and sorted. The wine is fermented in oak vats and aged in Tronçais oak barrels as for the first wine. In general, though, Pavillon Rouge is bottled three to four months earlier than Château Margaux.
James Suckling: 96 Points
This wine has a tightness and linear energy, with red currants, herbs, plums and hints of dark chocolate. Medium-bodied with beautiful integration and length. Racy and focused. Just the right amount of wood and fruit with tannins. Second wine of Chateau Margaux. 73% cabernet sauvignon, 18% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 4% cabernet franc.
