Chateau La Croix de Gay Description
Château La Croix de Gay is a wine estate in the north of the highly coveted Pomerol appellation of northeast Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Dordogne river. The property is owned by the Lebreton family, whose winemaking history dates back to 1772. Today the estate is overseen by Chantal Lebreton.
Although at the northern end of the Pomerol appellation, on the edge of the Barbanne stream, the château is well-placed, with Château Clinet and L'Eglise Clinet to the west, Château Le Gay to the east, with Pétrus and Château Lafleur to the southeast, a little further on.
The Croix de Gay vineyard covers just four hectares (10 acres) of land, and is divided into 10 parcels, planted chiefly to Merlot with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The plots cover Pomerol's high gravel plateau and graduate from large gravel particles at the top of the terrace, down to finer gravel on the south-facing slopes.
In the vineyards, grapes are harvested by hand only when they reach optimal ripeness. The grapes are processed using a gravity flow system and the wine is vinified in small cement vats. The Château le Croix de Gay grand vin is aged for up to two years in 50 percent new French oak barrels.
The Lebreton family also owns the Château La Fleur de Gay label. This wine is produced from a specific three-hectare block of Merlot within the La Croix de Gay estate.
James Suckling: 94 Points
A rich, multilayered nose of dark fruit, mushrooms, earth and violets. Some black olives, too. Full-bodied with layers of ripe tannins that are polished and refined. The finish is persistent and beautiful. Creamy at the end. Drink after 2023.
Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points
This powerful, Merlot-dominated wine is densely textured and concentrated. Powerful, dark fruits are as intense as the tannins, offering huge richness. For contrast, fresher acidity shoots through the wine, adding to the ageworthy promise.
Wine Spectator: 90 Points
Enticing, with a mix of crushed plum and loganberry fruit that has good inner brightness, while racy anise, savory and mineral details fill in throughout. Good cut on the finish too. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2030.
