Chateau Carbonnieux Description
When young, Carbonnieux white wines are delightfully refreshing and pure with a fruity, floral intensity. When mature they develop hints of dried and candied fruits giving scope for a large range of gastronomic pairings. The batches which will form part of this “cru classé” will be blended so as to induce an excellent complicity between the grape varieties. The chosen Semillon grapes will add structure to the liveliness of the Sauvignon grapes by giving them roundness and volume on the palate.
Daniel Hernandez-Brun for K&D: 94 Points
The 2020 Carbonnieux Blanc is sensational. It is comprised of 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Semillon. In the glass, it is a pale straw in color, with a silvery green hue. The bouquet is explosive, with generous floral notes, citrus, kiwi, and an underlying minerality. On the palate this is round and bright, very nicely balanced, with honeyed fruit notes and a taut, linear acidity. Delicious.
Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points
Crisp and tight with fine citrus flavors, the wine is beautifully proportioned with textured, zesty acidity. It shows balance between its structure and its fruits that will only get better as it matures.
James Suckling: 93 Points
Lots of dried lemon, spiced pear, matchstick, and ginger aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with light caramel, honey and some tropical fruits. Dense wine, but framed with phenolics. Delicious finish.
Decanter: 93 Points
One of the benchmark wines for white Pessacs, and it has succeeded here. Plenty of curling aromatics out of the glass, a lovely grip and bounce. Good stuff. A yield of 47hl/ha. 25% new oak.
Jeb Dunnuck: 93 Points
Richer notes of honeyed pineapple, crushed lemon, tangerine, and white flowers all emerge from the 2020 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc, a bright, juicy, vibrant white that has medium-bodied richness, good mid-palate concentration, and a great finish. It's another utterly classic Grave white that will evolve for at least a decade.
Wine Spectator: 92 Points
Fresh and breezy, with a fleur de sel edge that adds nice energy to the core of gooseberry, white peach and lemon gelée. Presents a pretty quinine echo through the finish. Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
The 2020 Carbonnieux Blanc has turned out very well in bottle, exhibiting attractive aromas of lemon oil, pomelo, crisp stone fruit, mint and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with a layered, concentrated mid-palate and a penetrating finish, it's a great success in the estate's Sauvginon-dominant style.
Vinous: 91 Points
The 2020 Carbonnieux Blanc has a noticeable green tinge. It has a fresh nose with red and green apple, Williams pear, and light nectarine notes, touches of chalk emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced with crisp acidity, taut and fresh, not powerful and rather light on its feet - a nimble white Pessac that should provide enjoyable early drinking.
