This vintage offers the great wine of Cantenac Brown - a complex and refined nose of violet, black fruits, licorice, and nutmeg. The palate is characterized by a soft and creamy entry, carried by an exceptional concentration of silky and velvety tannins. The density and length give Cantenac Brown a remarkable finish.
69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot
Chateau Cantenac Brown Description
Mother Nature likes to remind us periodically that she is the master of the game when it comes to great vintages. This is a perfect example. Our concern for perfection allows us to accompany, influence and shape as best we can what she gives us, but it is clear that the combination of climactic factors remains the key to a great vintage. Fortunately for us, winegrowers, the vine is an incredibly resistant plant. The heat of the sun and the limited water resources have forced it to hold its breath and to draw from the depths of the soil the elements necessary for its survival. The Merlot is incredibly dense and structured, while the Cabernet Sauvignon has an unprecedented concentration and energy.
James Suckling: 96 Points
Gorgeous blackberry, blackcurrant and tapenade aromas follow through to a medium body with super-integrated tannins that are very refined. The thick, polished, silky texture is impressive. Best ever from here.
Wine Advocate: 96 Points
A few years ago, this estate purchased 22 additional hectares in the heart of the plateau of Margaux, including old vine Cabernet Sauvignon that is now making an appreciable contribution to the blend, and that helps to explain why the 2022 Cantenac Brown is so good. Unwinding in the glass with notes of dark berries, plums, charcoal, pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and elegantly muscular, with a layered core, refined tannins and a penetrating finish. The finest wine that José Sanfins has produced to date, the 2022 only improved during the several weeks I spent in Bordeaux. It's a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Merlot.
Wine Spectator: 95 Points
Another beautifully rendered expression of the vintage, this marries lush boysenberry and blackberry fruit with fresh violet and iris notes, then stitches it all up gently with warm earth on the stylish, lengthy finish. It's hard to lay off already, but cellaring is warranted. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Vinous: 95 Points
The 2022 Cantenac Brown was a stunner from barrel. Now in bottle, it has a vivacious bouquet highlighting blackberry, wild strawberry and cedar aromas, with hints of violet emerging over time. It shows wonderful delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, fruit that is a little blacker than its peers, gentle grip, nicely judged acidity and a very harmonious, persistent finish. This is a seductive, quite sensual Cantenac Brown worthy of their brand new winery. It's superb.
