Campo del Drago is a Brunello di Montalcino cru from the finest vineyard in the Capanna area, a hectare and a half at the highest elevation. Superbly-structured and with a distinctive personality, it is the most refined expression of Sangiovese produced at Castiglion del Bosco.
Campo del Drago enjoys one of its highest expressions when paired with the succulence and softness of pigeon, whose breast is served here at its most delicate. The bold spicing of the wine is perfectly at one with the flavor combination bestowed to the meat by the beetroot, celeriac and the exotic overtones of coffee.
James Suckling: 97 Points
Berry aromas with fresh herbs, such as lemon grass and basil, from the mostly whole-berry fermentation. Lots of fresh flowers, too. Medium body with a solid core of fruit and very fine tannins that are polished and beautifully curated. Lovely presence and harmony.
Wine Spectator: 95 Points
Complex and rich, sumptuous even, boasting flavors of cherry, plum, leather, mineral, dusky spices and tobacco, underscored by a stream of dense, dusty tannins. This coasts to a finish that is tactile, echoing ripe fruit and mineral accents.
Wine Enthusiast: 95 Points
The nose is nostalgic and lightly sweet, with aromas of vanilla, cloves, cardamom and cherry, along with faint undertones of dried tomatoes and balsamic. On the palate, the cherries star, while fighting back ferocious tannins and piercing acid.
Vinous: 95 Points
Dark and savory in the glass, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Campo del Drago lifts up with a bouquet of grilled herbs, exotic spices, ashen and dried wild berries. It's soft and enveloping, yet there's an energy within. Zesty acidity motivates its tart red fruits, all underscored by a salty core of minerality. This finishes long nd staining with a coating of grippy tannins, yet is still remarkably fresh. Rosy inner florals linger.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
The Castiglion del Bosco 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Campo del Drago has cola, blackberry, soft tannins and a medium-weight mouthfeel that expands softly over the senses, imparting lasting length and sweet fruit flavors. There are savory or earthy tones as well, with integrated freshness. The Campo del Drago Vineyard rests on the crest of a hill with panoramic views that extend down to southern Tuscany and toward the Tyrrhenian coast.
