Flavors of plums, cherries, blackberry jam and raspberries, with just a hint of wood. Well-structured with extraordinary concentration of fruit. Supple tannins and long finish. Ideal with red meat, savory game, and aged cheeses.
James Suckling: 95 Points
Very ripe and dense with lots of dried-fruit, spice and cedar character. Some cigar box, too. Full-bodied, velvety and rich. Powerful.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
Bright and generous, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura opens to a darkly concentrated appearance and bold aromatic intensity. The wine is forthcoming and immediate in appeal. The bouquet is redolent of blackberry, cherry confit, exotic spice, cola and dark chewing tobacco. The mouthfeel shows a higher degree of tannic astringency, however that may come from the oak. Poggio alle Mura sees up to 80% aged in barrique for two years and the rest in botte grand. I'd suggest giving it a few more years to let that firmness subside and soften.
Wine Spectator: 93 Points
A dense, burly style, displaying cherry, iron, leather, earth, tobacco and spice flavors. Unyielding and compact now, yet also complex and long.
Wine Enthusiast: 92 Points
Plummy aromas mix in the glass with whiffs of pressed blue flower, vanilla and mocha. The taut structured palate offers dried black cherry, coconut, licorice, espresso and black pepper while firm fine-grained tannins provide the framework. A note of pipe tobacco closes the tight finish. Give it a few more years to unwind and fully develop.
