Cabernet Franc is one of the oldest varietals cultivated for wine. In fact, it is a ‘parent’ grape of many important wine cultivars, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Known for its dark skin and jammy flavors, Cabernet Franc is important as a blending varietal in regions such as Bordeaux and California. In addition: several cool-climate regions are known for producing single-varietal Cabernet Franc bottlings - including, the Loire Valley, where Cabernet Franc wines are produced in (and named after) the commune of Chinon; as well as, the Finger Lakes in New York state. Such cool-climate Cab franc wines may display typical pyrazine notes (often described as bell-pepper), or, occasionally, funky, tertiary aromas that add interest to Cab franc’s fruit-forward profile.
