The Powder House is a study in minerality and persistence. True to its name, the wine bounds out of the glass with powdered lime zest and crushed seashell aromatics that frame notes of candied green apple and Madame Plantier rose. Sweet graham cracker and almond croissant perfectly knit with these lifted citrus and orchard fruits across the palate alongside an unfading, saline minerality. Structurally, the wine is poised and precise, with mouthwatering acidity characteristic of a true vin de garde.
James Suckling: 97 Points
Love the aromas of lemon-lime, gunpowder, kiwi, and dried lemons. It’s full, phenolic and solid. This is like red wine in structure. Long and persistent. One for the cellar. Give this some time.
Wine Advocate: 97 Points
Planted in 2013 to a mix of Hyde Old Wente and Mount Eden, Aubert's 2021 Chardonnay Powder House features prominent notes of toasted hazelnut and crushed stone atop a base of white peaches, lemon-lime notes and cooling herbs. It's medium to full-bodied and generous enough on the mid-palate but with a spine of bright, vivacious acidity and a long, zesty finish.
Wine Spectator: 95 Points
This white is aromatic and well-defined, but also shows a wonderful sense of restraint, offering complex notes of cardamom, nutmeg and ginger that show a touch of crunchy sea salt and a hint of toasted sesame seed, with fruit flavors of melon, citrus, peach and Honeycrisp apple that are fresh and vibrant. All of that complexity really sings harmoniously on the finish.
