Montiano is no doubt one of the most important red wines of Lazio and is counted among the great Merlots of Italy. Renzo and Riccardo Cotarella started cultivating Merlot in the hills of Tuscia after having founded the Falesco winery and with the 1993 harvest they produced the first vintage of Montiano.
It has a wonderful, deep, ruby red colour, a wide aromatic range of scents in which delicious vanilla notes, small red fruit, layers of jam and sweet spices combine. The taste appears to have a full aristocratic roundness and softness, with quite elegant, agreeable and lingering flavours.
Vinous: 95 Points
The 2019 Merlot Montiano is a dark beauty, but also a bit of a caged beast; it smolders up from the glass with a bouquet of smoky blackberry and raspberry contrasted by crushed stone, grilled sage, and incense. It washes across the palate with pure elegance, coming across as both polished yet also saline in character, with stimulating acidity that energizes its violet-laced plum and wild blueberry fruit. This finishes long with a coating of sweet tannins, while inner florals and nuances of licorice resonate. The 2019 is incredibly complex; as expressive as it is today, it will only get better over time. This is a brilliant showing. Famiglia Cotarella continues to dial back on the percentage of new wood used in Montiano, now at around 55%, which is a welcome change.
James Suckling: 95 Points
This pure merlot offers fascinating aromas of purple fruits, spices, green olives, sandalwood. Medium body, firm tannins and a linear finish. Subtle walnut, chocolate, blackberry, and a black olive character comes out at the end. Tight and polished.
